Course Content
The Further Pure Mathematics module covers Complex Numbers, Numerical Solutions of Equations, Coordinate Systems, Matrix Algebra, Series and Proof by Induction. The Decision module introduces Algorithms, Graphs and Networks, Route Inspection, Matchings, Linear Programming and Critical Path Analysis. By studying Mechanics 1, pupils learn about Vectors, Kinematics, Statics and Dynamics of a Particle and Moments.
Skills gained from taking this course
By studying Further Mathematics, pupils gain a broader and more in-depth knowledge of a variety of fields of Mathematics. In addition, students learn highly transferable skills such as logic, independent thought and problem solving. Wherever possible pupils apply their knowledge to real-world problems. Further Mathematics is highly regarded by universities and future employers, and any student considering applying for courses with a high mathematical content (such as Physics or Engineering) and/or competitive entry, will be at an advantage if they were to choose Further Mathematics as an A-level option.
Entry Requirements (all A2 subjects carry a minimum requirement of a D-grade AS level)
The school offer for entry is 5 GCSEs at B Grade and above with English Language or Literature and Mathematics at A* - C grade.
Pupils must have at least a B grade on the Higher Tier GCSE paper.
Entry Suggestions
We strongly suggest that you choose to study Further Mathematics only if you have an A or A* grade at GCSE, and a genuine passion for the subject. It is a demanding, but rewarding course and pupils need both excellent GCSE grades and the right attitude to succeed in their studies.
If you are made an offer and meet the required grade, you will be expected to complete the following before your first lesson in September:
N/A
Resources needed for this course (Books, Field-trips etc)
For 2008 books were:
Further Pure Mathematics 1 for Edexcel
Decision 1 for Edexcel
Mechanics 1 for Edexcel
Books will not necessarily stay the same for subsequent years, so students should wait for definite confirmation of titles before purchasing
