Raleigh

St. Marylebone School is proud to be working with Raleigh International to develop a unique Personal Development Programme.

Raleigh is a youth education charity whose aim is to inspire young people from all walks of life to become confident, active global citizens. They provide 4, 5, 7 and 10 week expeditions which young people can join directly and also tailor-made expeditions for school and youth groups. We are working with them to use their internationally recognised expertise in developing Personal Development and Leadership training (in courses used by many multi-national companies) and their international links to create a dynamic and exciting personal development programme.

Raleigh are committed to helping young people develop new skills and friendships, to increase their understanding of international issues and other cultures and to unite them as part of a global community who can work together and rise to the challenges of the world we live in. At St Marylebone we also believe young people require relevant education to allow them to both flourish and contribute to an increasingly evolving, culturally integrative and competitive global society.

To assist in this Raleigh has developed a programme for St Marylebone Sixth Form College students which embraces governmental and national curriculum objectives around improving global learning and facilitates schools in developing an ethos that develops passionate, responsible, socio-cultural and globally aware students. It should also be great fun!

Summary of Raleigh Programme

The Opportunity

To join a three week Raleigh expedition in India (in Summer 2010). The expedition will include:

  • A pre-expedition training event in UK
  • A 2 day induction programme in India which includes safety training and acclimatisation
  • A short community project developed in partnership with local NGOs and communities
  • An adventure challenge
  • Dedicated Raleigh project staff for the school expedition plus support from Raleigh Country Director and Country Programme Manager who are permanently based in India.

Community projects are the best way for groups to genuinely interact with the local communities and learn about the culture of India. Raleigh is involved in a wide variety of community based projects, ranging from the construction of kindergartens and libraries to providing villages with a water supply and eco-sanitation units. The adventure challenge will involve a series of physical and mental challenges amidst remarkable and varied scenery and will include trekking, orienteering and potentially some water-based activity.

This expedition will provide participants with an opportunity to engage with local communities at a grassroots level, contribute to a worthwhile project, get back to basics with the environment, experience physical adventure and build on key soft skills of team-working, leadership and problem solving.

The Country

India is the 7th largest country in the world and encompasses some of the world's most bio diverse regions with a multitude of traditions, culture and history. It is one of the most diverse nations in terms of religion. India has the world's fastest growing population but also some of the sharpest inequalities, especially in rural areas where almost 80 percent of India's poor live. The government, through NGOs, is focusing major efforts upon health, education and agricultural land reform in marginalised communities. Raleigh launched its first core expedition to India in February 2008, our aim being to work with NGOs in the three southern states of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to improve the quality of life for rural communities where we can make a difference in the areas of health and educational services.
