Course Content
We are pleased to offer product design (which also includes an optional graphic design element) as our Design and Technology A Level.
Fifty percent of the qualification is allocated to a major coursework project, which the students write and specify themselves. The other 50% is a written exam that covers materials theory and the history of design.
Design and Technology A level is an excellent foundation for further studies in design at college or university. It is a good basis for a degree in graphics, engineering, architecture, interior design, product design, theatre and TV design - and many other design disciplines.
We also help students find excellent work placements in design practices; arrange relevant industrial and cultural visits; organise guest speakers; and help students prepare specialist portfolios in preparation for university entrance interviews.
Students must be prepared to work consistently throughout the course in order to produce high quality design work and excellent finished products. They will be supported by well qualified teachers who have all worked in the design and engineering industry and who achieve excellent results.
Entry Requirements (all A2 subjects carry a minimum requirement of a D-grade AS level)
The school offer for entry is 5 GCSEs at B Grade and above with English Language or Literature and Mathematics at A* - C grade.
Design and Technology A level is a natural progression from GCSE. We ask that students have achieved at least a B grade in a Design and Technology subject. In certain circumstances we will accept students without a D+T GCSE, subject to an interview.
Entry Suggestions
We ask all applicants to have an interest in all aspects of art, design and making. Good practical skills are an advantage but the most important thing is an ability to work independently and a passion for three and two dimensional art and design.
If you are made an offer and meet the required grade, you will be expected to complete the following before your first lesson in September:
Collect an annotated scrap book of at least twenty examples of good design.
Resources needed for this course (Books, Field-trips etc)
AQA text book. (£15:00)
We will ask students for a small financial donation towards the cost of materials.
